The Mommy Overtime Shift.

The mommy overtime shift usually consisting of child illness often involving long sleepless days and nights. There is no overtime pay and the benefits of the job stay the same. The usual mommy janitorial duties double, the chefs duties often become more like serving copious amounts of virgin beverages, with no tipping but many complaints. These duties also consists of excessive guilt and worry as to whether we have or are making the best choices in relation to medication or lack of medication, herbs vs. homeopathy, western vs. eastern and with heavy hearts we watch, wait and hope.

So today...
I take temperatures in 30 minute intervals,
I bring cold cloths,
I administer fluids,
I swish out buckets,
I bring Kleenex(or become the Kleenex)
I read labels carefully and administer what I hope is best,
then...
I watch,
I wait,
I hope,
and above all I pray.

To all those mothers who have endured chronically ill children my heart goes out to you, in between the prayers for my own feverish boys I will be send my thoughts and prayers out for you.

*(quick update both boys have eaten, fevers have broken and they have fallen into deep slumber, sigh.)

Thanks for the info about felting - I will have to check out that shop next time I am in the area.

And oh! I am doing the Steveston Christmas Craft Fair next weekend on the 28th. It's from 10am to 4pm inside the indoor tennis courts at Steveston Community Centre (4111 Moncton Street). Would love to see you there!

Aww, hope the boys feel better soon...

This mommy overtime thing is something I knew about but never REALLY knew about until these last 6 weeks. Where are my weekends off? my hour lunch? my paycheque? ... my sanity? This is harder than working on an ambulance during a 12 hour night shift on the downtown east side with a machismo of a partner named Carl...
